Fashion Torque!

I'm usually behind the camera but last week I was thrust in front of the camera to shoot the above image! It's the official image of a new project that I'm doing with the fantastic, legendary fashion designer Jenny Bannister!
It's called 'Fashion Torque' and its a fashion focused discussion hosted by myself and Jenny Bannister. It's a live chat show in a salon atmosphere at Globe Cafe in Prahran Victoria and we hope to cover the big questions in fashion, for both newcomers to the industry and veterans of this mad business!
Jenny and I have talked about doing something together for a while now and we think the fashion landscape needs a forum for every aspect of fashion, from styling to retail to PR.
We will have two guest panelists each week who will join us to discuss, argue and entertain on all things fashion, watch out television programmers we are coming to get you!
I asked photographer Garry Moore to capture Jenny and in action and I think he did a fantastic job. Jenny and I both styled our outfits to reflect our personal style while being fun and over the top! I think we both accomplished that!
I love Jenny's style and her use of colour is not only evident in her personal style but in her fabulous work over the 30 years she has been in the fashion industry, she's even on a stamp!
A big thank you to the wonderful Garry Moore for capturing Jenny and my humour and style.
Our shoot was a complete hoot with all of the crew in hysterics at Jenny's stories and infectious laughter.
I'm constantly amazed by Jenny's accessories and this silver eye ring is so great!

A Summer Man...

A few months back I styled a menswear shoot for the current issue of Fashion Trend magazine. I like to take behind the scenes photo's to show you the reader of my blog what goes on when working on an editorial shoot but of course the problem is I can't show you these photo's till the magazine is actually out. Well Fashion Trend is out now and you can check out this editorial I shot with photographer Philippe Auger right now! The pic above is make up artist Bradwyn Jones grooming model Nick Wheeler.
This shot above is of model Ish and the main styling directive of the whole shoot was to combine colour blocking with a strong masculine feel all for a spring summer release.
The editorial shoot gave me the chance to use some amazing new Menswear designers along with some more established labels which I think reflects the modernity of menswear today. I always like to use as much local Australian designer fashion as possible and was really excited to feature Australian labels Trimapee, Limedrop, From Britten, Clemente Talarico and Leopold along with CK Calvin Klein and jewelery store Glitzern.
Another photo where I look like I just lift a collar or put a shoe on, I assure you I'm working my fingers to the bone! Bradwyn grooming his heart out too.
The above image did not make it to the final edit of the spread but I personally love this outfit consisting of Limedrop's Mens tunic and Leopold shorts and shoes, the chair is an amazing minimalist design from Corporate Culture
My great friend Jamie Couper Senior buyer at CK Calvin Klein is always so accommodating, allowing me to use the latest pieces from their collection and the suit above and shirt below are fine examples of the current collection.

Spring Designer Show

The above photo is so funny to me, another shot of me with a gorgeous tall model totally dwarfing me! This time it's the beautiful Alice Burdeau, star of two Vogue covers and the most successful Australia's Next Top Model winner ever! I love the always gracious Alice, she is currently dating another good friend hot photographer Christian Blanchard. In my defense Alice is 6 foot and she's wearing 4 inch heels, yeh ok I'm short!
This week Alice was the star model for a fashion show I styled at Melbourne Central focussing on Spring Racing Carnival Fashion and highlighting top designers; Thurley, CK Calvin Klein, Arthur Galan, Nine West, Mimco, Alannah Hill, Dom Bagnato and designer store Fame Agenda.
The colour palette of the fashion show needed to be vibrant and 'spring like' so I chose outfits accordingly. A big thank you to my assistants Steph Marks, Jess Shoppee and Felicity Maniszewski. I especially have to comment on Steph who's Grandmother passed away the morning of the show and she insisted that she see through her commitment, really living 'that the show must go on'. Big thanks Stephy.
Hats are a must for Spring Racing Carnival and I always say when people complain about having to wear one at this time of year, ' When in your everyday life to you get to dress like a movie star?' I'm all about feeling great about yourself through the clothing you choose to wear.

Missoni musings...

The last month has been busy for me with some fantastic work opportunities and great projects. One of my great supporters through my career has been the wonderful John Flower of Hot House Media and his right hand man Steve Rainey approached me recently to style the clothing component of an amazing event for one of their major clients, San Pelligrino. The event was to be held at arguably Melbourne's finest restaurant Jacques Reymond and was named, 'S.Pellegrino meets Missoni' a concept of two famous Italian families coming together over their love of quality and great design. The event would be a dinner for twenty six A-listers in Melbourne to launch the newly designed by Missoni water bottle called S.Pellegrino and to enjoy a beautiful dinner and see an amazing video on the two italian families talking of their love of fashion and design, greeted by two model ambassadors dressed in the latest collection by Missoni hand picked by head designer at Missoni, Angela Missoni and styled for the event by me! The above photo (taken by photog Marnie Haddad) is of San Pellegrino's Manuela Capponi wearing vintage Missoni and flanked by Missoni ambassadors on the night Lucy and Shoona wearing the latest collection Missoni couture.
Hot House Media chose top models Lucy McIntosh(engaged to Black Eyed Peas member DJ Poet) and Shoona from Chadwicks Models as fashion ambassadors on the night and I enlisted fab celebrity Make up artist Narelle Hall(and one of my best friends) to create a luxurious resort style look on the two gorgeous models. Missoni embodies quality and colourful patterned glamour and so Narelle and I set about creating this look.
I chose unique accessories from my favourite jewelery store Glitzern to compliment.
Zomp shoes added to the luxury look of the wonderful gowns.
Narelle used greens and apricots to work with the colours of Lucy's gown.
Lots of bangles creates that extravagant look, Lucy on the phone to fiance Black Eyed Peas DJ Poet!
The private dining room at Jacques Reymond was transformed into a colourful explosion of spring colour , centre piece floral arrangements echoed the bright patterned fabrics that Missoni is so well known for!
John Flower and Steve Rainey were so generous to invite me to join the guests at the dinner and I sat next to the witty and entertaining Suzanne Carbone of The Age newspaper, other guests in attendance were top chefs, food writers, fashion editors and my friend the stylish fashion designer Lisa Gorman and her partner Dean Angelucci of those great furniture stores Angelucci's.

The last month...

Well well well again my working life (and a few other things) have stopped me from blogging every week as I set out to do, so I'd like to update you on what I've been up to over the last month, hoping that in the future I will be back on track!
As my last post announced I have been planning a workshop for Melbourne Spring fashion Week for a few months on Styling and it all came to fruition on Saturday September 4th 2010.
My wonderful agents at Miss Bossy Boots and I sat down about two months ago after I came up with the idea to create a workshop specifically around the art of styling. After being approached by MSFW to do something 'special' for this years festivities the great folk at Miss Bossy Boots agreed to produce and promote my workshop.
So many ideas went through my mind when setting out to create this workshop, after being asked to speak at many workshops and conferences I really wanted this event to be more like you were watching a TV show or being invited into someone home to listen in on some great information, but mostly to be entertaining. And fun.
I thought the perfect place to hold this workshop was the top floor event space at the Whitehouse Institute of Design where I lecture and the lovely people at Whitehouse came onboard as one of amazing sponsors.
So next I went about finding the right people that would entertain, inform and excite. I also didn't want the audience to be 'talked at' but really to over hear my guests experiences and opinions.
I love the idea of a Fashion Chat Show and went about finding the right presenter to add to this feel, I found the newly arrived to this country , Carolyn Taylor who did an amazing job of interviewing me firstly, but mostly for keeping the workshop upbeat and lively, thank you Carolyn(pictured above with me, Carolyn dressed by Madam Virtue & Co and CK Calvin Klein dressed the Stylist himself), you must look out for her on TV soon as in her native NZ she is very well known and I'm sure will be here very soon.

I thought another part to my workshop would be the addition of a mini fashion show highlighting 3 different parts of my work as a stylist; Red Carpet Events, Fashion Shows and Editorial Photo Shoots and asked three of my favourite Fashion brands, Aurelio Costarella, CK Calvin Klein and Madam Virtue & Co to be our fashion sponsors all modeled by another fantastic sponsor Cameron's Models. As I said earlier I've always wanted to host my own chat show about Fashion particularly and the second part of the workshop gave me the chance to do this when I invited three friends to join my celebrity fashion panel all with their own opinions on styling. Vintage glamour ambassador Candice De Ville, movie and TV actress (and client for 5 years) Daniela Farinacci and legendary fashion designer Jenny Bannister. What ensued was a lively, sometimes controversial, informative and mostly entertaining discussion of all things fashion and personal style. I could have sat chatting with all my panelists for days and can't wait to do it again very very soon.
So all in all it was a fantastic success and a very big thank you to Veronica, Garry, Jamie and Dean at Miss Bossy Boots for a great production, to my fab friend Narelle Hall for her Hair and Make Up expertise assisted by the lovely Eve Flight, to all my wonderfully hardworking volunteers, to my assistant Steph for all her work, to the amazingly generous sponsors; Aurelio Costarella, CK Calvin Klein, Madam Virtue & Co, Art Series Hotel Group, Zomp, Cameron's Models, Whitehouse Institute of Design, Urban Jungle, Spook Magazine and Nutrient Water.

A week later...

Now just when I thought things had slowed down a tad (post workshop) I heard news that the spectacular Charlotte Dawson (of Australia's Next Top Model) was jetting into town and tweeted her did she fancy a catch up and bit of a tour around Melbourne, we promptly planned a breakfast and shopping expedition. After a quick evaluation of Charlotte's wants on the fashion front (and a great breakfast at Il Fornaio in St Kilda sitting alongside the kooky designer Alannah Hill) we zoomed off in my vintage Mercedes (check my earlier blog posts) for Melbourne's fashion hotspots, first stop 'Moot' sunglass emporium in Prahran where Charlotte picked up a great selection of the latest 'face furniture'!

Onto Melbourne city where we hit Crossley Streets best, jewellery from Glitzern and accessories from Madam Virtue & Co then off we went to Luisa on Collins Street.
It was so great to have Charlotte here in Melbourne and I look forward to seeing her in Sydney very soon, also look out for the live finale of 'Australia's Next Top Model' on FOX8.

The Stylist Says Workshop!!!

Stylist Philip Boon brings his insight from the worlds of Celebrity and Fashion to this year’s Melbourne Spring Fashion Week in a workshop aimed at Fashionistas, Fashion Students, “Crazy Shoppers” or anyone who has ever wanted to dress (themselves or others) like a “Red Carpet Star”.

Philip has spent almost two decades working as a stylist, designer, and as a creative director with countless independent designers, playing an instrumental role in the launch of their careers. Philip’s work as a stylist has taken him to various cities around the world; including Milan, Hamburg, Miami, Los Angeles and New York.

Philip has styled famous clients as diverse as Sam Sparro and Sneaky Sound System to Magda Szubanski and even the controversial Marion Jones, and has made appearances in many TV shows, including a memorable episode of “Australia’s Next Top Model” alongside Sarah Murdoch.

Those attending the Workshop on September 4th can expect an informative, up-to-the-minute look at modern dressing, presentation and styling in 2010 and beyond, garnished with tales from Philip’s adventures dressing A-List actors, actresses and supermodels, both for editorial and red carpet events.

The audience will also see some of this season’s best when Philip assembles outfits by the likes of Aurelio Costarella, CK Calvin Klein and Madam Virtue & Co. A host of special guests from the industry will also share the stage to make for an informative, interactive and entertaining workshop.

MIFF Red Carpet

My wonderful friend (and client) the actor Daniela Farinacci who is currently starring in the feature film 'Lou' along with the amazing British actor John Hurt and is also a star of that fantastic television Police drama 'East West 101' on SBS television called me the other day with an invite to the launch screening and party of the 2010 Melbourne International Film Festival, and asked that I find a suitably glamorous outfit for her to wear, the following blog post is a behind the scenes look at our journey into red carpet glory! I have known (and dressed) Daniela for over 5 years now and love using Australian designers mostly but sometimes like to mix it up with some beautiful international pieces , I found the above, and below, dress at my favourite little boutique 'Madam Virtue & Co' and thought the colour was great on Daniela but we decided it wasn't right for this particular event.
This neck piece definitely has the wow factor but also is a little humorous.
Both Daniela and myself loved this vibrant green gown but again not completely suited to the event.
A gold Givenchy cuff went beautifully with the green gown.
But when Daniela slipped into this beaded black and off white gown we both knew this was the winner, and I commented that it was by far the sexiest option!
Having dressed many actresses over the years for many red carpet events(and a lot of other things) being able to call on and use amazing jewellery has been invaluable, I have always loved Jan Logan's jewellery, whether it be diamonds, pearls or the myriad of semi precious stones she uses, it is always the perfect end to styling an outfit for a red carpet event. I chose the above creations of Jan's to finish the look for Daniela.
The red carpet at MIFF was certainly busy with international stars such as Adrian Grenier, Ashton Kutcher and star of the first movie to be screened Isabel Lucas in attendance, that movie was 'The Wedding Party'.
Daniela looked beautiful on the red carpet and was snapped, and interviewed many times.
We had a fantastic night and I think you'll agree Daniela looked amazing, and especially with the addition of a vintage arctic fox fur, pictured below, snapped after we returned home.

A sneak peek at Sam...

As was reported in the press here in Melbourne recently, the talented recording star Sam Sparro jetted into town for a photo shoot with Super Blogger Jamie Wdziekonski of 'Oh Jamie' and myself, Sam in fact made a special trip to Melbourne only to do this shoot! Jamie approached me to style this amazingly talented pop star for some upcoming publicity shots and I couldn't wait to work on the concept after discussing with Sam and Jamie the new direction of Sam's music. Of course I can't give too much away as Sam's new album will be out next year but these images give you a sneak peek into a fantastic day working with a talented pop star and talented blogger.

A Supermodel of any era!

I received a call recently from my wonderful friend Melinda Collette co owner of Cameron's Models and she asked me if I would style a shoot for the amazing Supermodel of the 80's Isabel Cowan who Cameron's represent, sort of as a comeback shoot. Of course I jumped at the chance to style one of Australia's first Supermodels who had graced the cover of Vogue multiple times! As you can see in this blog post her covers of Vogue (and other mags) are the height of 80's fashion and I was so happy that Isabel allowed me to snap some shots right out of her portfolio. Ask anyone that lived through the 80's in Australia and they will tell you that Isabel was the model dujour and commanded the cover of all fashion magazines at the time.

I love the coloured fur in this cover shot, again so now!
So our job was to re invent Isabel for 2010, in a contemporary , luxurious, expensive way that could easily be seen in the pages of present day Vogue. I knew that we had to use only high end designers that would reflect Isabel's still amazing beauty and to bring a modern take on elegance.
I decided along with Melinda and well known photographer Andrew Gash (who I hadn't worked with in over 10 years) to create a palette of black, white and nude to really let Isabel's beauty shine.

How elegant, yet modern does Isabel look? Stunning silk gown by Madam Virtue & Co designer JC Lloyd Southwell D'Anvers.
The fabulous make up artist Narelle Hall painted a beautiful picture on a beautiful face. Narelle also crafted exceptional hair styles.
I love Isabel in this chic Sonia Rykiel gown, so simple but modern.
I LOVE this image of Isabel that I snapped in the kitchen of the studio between shots, so casual yet so beautiful, of course she brings this Chanel Couture gown to life.
So french this look...
It was such a treat to work with the master photographer Andrew Gash after many, many years and his shots of Isabel are magnificent. I can't wait to do it again.
This Madam Virtue & Co gown encapsulates Isabel's inner elegance so well and in the close up below I decided I needed to give the elegance a twist by using this fantastic diamante skull neck piece. How stunning does Isabel look in this candid shot, just as stunning as in those 80's Vogue covers!
I was so honoured to work with Isabel and to see her again. I hope that she loves these images we created as much as I do. I look forward to her gracing the covers of magazines again!

Classroom styling...

I don't think I've mentioned on this blog that this year I started lecturing at a design school called The Whitehouse Institute of Design one day a week on styling and creative direction, it's been a great experience for me and I believe that you never stop learning, even as a teacher! The reason I decided to embark on this off shoot of my career was really to give back to the industry that has been so great to me and to hopefully share some of my experiences and opinions with the students who choose to come along on the journey! Part of my classes are to introduce the students to the talented people I work with every day and sometimes bring those wonderful creative identities into the classroom, recently I thought of producing a shoot for a magazine ACTUALLY in the classroom! I asked photographer Philippe Auger and make up artist Narelle Hall (who I work with often on editorial) if they were up for the challenge of shooting a high fashion story for a mag within the confines of a design school classroom while both of the classes I teach watch on. You can imagine that this was no easy feat and I had to do a lot of persuading! But luckily those fab creative people I work with are always up for a challenge and came through with the goods and then some! The images on this blog post are the result and I think you will be just as amazed as me that these were all shot within a classroom. Big thanks to our amazing model Hannah from Camerons Models, my fantastic friend and incredible hair and make up artist Narelle Hall, Fabulous French Photographer Philippe Auger for his beautiful shots and last but by no means least my students for their assistance on the day and hopefully their ongoing enthusiasm.

A Grand Hotel!

Firstly, again I have to apologize for not blogging for a month, my work life has stopped my blogging life! I am back on track now and have some exciting projects to tell you about in the coming months!
But more recently I was invited to view the newly renovated areas of the Melbourne Grand Hyatt by Marketing Communications Manager and friend, the lovely Lucy Owens.
So many photo shoots, celebrity consultations and fashion moments happen in hotel suites and I'm always sourcing for new locations to use so when Lucy invited me to experience The Grand Hyatt's 'Residence' area I jumped at it! Lucy also gave me a sneek peek into the newly renovated Penthouses and I snapped a few pics of them.

A Silver Logie of a Lady!

This post is not so much a look at my work but a 'behind the scenes' peek into the spontaneity of my life! This last Sunday I was sitting with my wonderful friend Nigel Stanislaus, Director of Make Up at Maybelline NY Australia having brunch and catching up when the gorgeous Charlotte Dawson of Australia's Next Top Model (and many other tv shows) called to say she was in Melbourne to present an award at Australian TV's night of nights, The Logie Awards! (For you international readers The Logies are Australia's version of The Emmy Awards)
If you are regular reader of this blog you would know that I made a guest appearance on last years ANTM and also blogged a visit I made to Sydney and caught up with Charlotte. I simply adore Charlotte and her quick wit and hysterical humour and hope that one day those television execs give her her own chat show, I think she would give America's Chelsea Handler a run for her money!!!
ANYWAY Charlotte called and Nigel offered to create his magic and do Charlotte's make up, I tagged along to give my assistance but mostly to catch up with Charlotte, the above photo(yes blurred, can't see wrinkles then!) Nigel and I joked was us posing as a crack, creative, SWAT team(or just hamming it up as usual!)

If you're a regular viewer of ANTM you will know last years winner Tahni Atkinson who was attending the Logies as well, how short am I next to this tall beautiful girl! She WAS wearing high platform heels! Thats my excuse anyway! We caught up in the Lobby before she walked the red carpet, it was great seeing her and you'll see some beautiful photo's of her in the May issue of Harpers Bazaar Australia.
Both Nigel and I had a great day and I personally thank Charlotte for a fun filled afternoon!

Ahead of next weeks RAFW (Rosemount Australian Fashion Week) in Sydney I thought I would give you a glimpse of one of the collections that will be shown there, my friend Aurelio Costarella. A few weeks back I was shown the collection by the man himself and head of marketing Paul O Connor, the whole collection looks amazing but I must say I was blown away by the gowns particularly! Ray has again created beautiful couture pieces that I could imagine gracing the red carpet on any of my celebrity clients. I've already spoken to a few of the actresses I work with about upcoming red carpet events!
I can't wait to use some of these pieces in upcoming editorial.

A great part of my career has been working with young creative people and a few weeks back I had the chance to work with up and coming photographer/blogger/fashion identity Jamie Wdziekonski on his 100th blog post. I met Jamie about a year and a half ago when he started work experience with my Agents at Miss Bossy Boots, they loved his work and asked him to be a regular part of the team. Since then I have seen him evolve into an amazing creative young man who has turned his talents to photography and then as the hottest blogger around! I can't tell you how many movers and shakers in the fashion industry have whispered to me during Melbourne Fashion Week that he is someone to watch!
Jamie had an idea to create a 'Alexander Wang style' shoot for his 100th blog post and we sat down an chatted about styling concepts, models, bloggers and designers that he wanted to feature. As you can see by the images I think he chose an up to the minute snapshot of new, creative talented types of Melbourne.

One Hot Director!

Well as I mentioned in my last blog post I was lucky to be granted access to the not yet completed(a month ago) 'Olsen Hotel' to shoot a story for a yet to be named magazine(you should know the deal with these things now if you're a regular reader) on female 'Hot Directors', and if you are also a regular reader you will realize that I have a close friend who is one of those 'Hot Directors' , the gorgeous Helen Clemens! Helen and I have worked together for years on many different projects and continue to be firm friends as well as creative contemporaries. So when the opportunity came up to shoot this story I made a few calls to the great people at 'The Olsen Hotel', in particular the lovely Emma Beattie to arrange our entrance to the worksite that was 'The Olsen Hotel' at that time, luckily a few suites were completed and we proceeded to create an 'LA feel' in and around this now great hotel!
My publicist/producer Dean Drieberg and myself thought the talented photographer Christian Blanchard would capture Helen in this setting at her best and he graciously accepted the assignment. I wanted the feel of the shoot to evoke a modern, LA style that could be seen on an international level.

The Olsen Hotel Opening

Firstly I have to apologize for this blog being dormant for the last month, my excuse is that it was a mix of losing my phone(most of the images are taken by my iphone!), the madness of L'oreal Melbourne Fashion Week and a multitude of personal issues! ANYWAY I'm back on board and ready to bombard you with a plethora of new and hopefully interesting posts on my life and what I've been up to in the absence!
Last Thursday I was invited to the grand opening of the amazing new 'Olsen Hotel', part of the Art Series Hotel Group, and what a night it was! I had a few weeks earlier been the lucky first person to organise and shoot a fashion story in the hotel before it was completed and opened.( In the next few days I will post this behind the scenes story) At that time I was amazed at how fantastic the hotel was looking and couldn't wait to see it completed, and so last Thursday I saw 'The Olsen Hotel" in all its glory. Now to give you a bit of background, The Olsen is named after one of Australia's living legend artists, John Olsen and his beautiful landscapes are featured throughout the hotel. What made this night more memorable was that the 83 year old John Olsen himself was there to open it! The picture above is the view from the Penthouse, where of course I was quite at home!

'Japanese Couture Master Designers'

My great friend Dean Hewitt is presenting an installation of his archive collection of the great Japanese Designers: Issey Miyake, Yohji Yamamoto, Comme De Garcon, Kenzo and many more at his wonderful store Madam Virtue & Co, 5 Crossley Street Melbourne from the 8th March 2010 to 20th March 2010 as part of the LMFF Cultural Program.
Dean and his partner JC Lloyd Southwell D'Anvers have the most amazing collection of couture pieces in their store and I continually find it a fantastic source of inspiration to my work. They understand that fashion at this level verges on art and buy accordingly to reflect their aesthetic.
Over many years and over many continents Dean has collected some of the most creative, influential designer pieces of Japanese clothing and will showcase in this exhibition some designs that have never been available in this country before.
The photographs in this post are by the wonderfully talented Robyn Lea, so beautifully shot and I thought it might be nice to see images on here that are not taken by me with my iphone!

Last week I received a phone call from my publicist and producer Dean Drieberg regarding an upcoming fashion shoot for one of the amazing photographers on my agency, Miss Bossy Boots books. Photographer Amelia Soegijono is represented by MBB and Dean in Sydney and asked if I would be interested in working with her on a exhibition piece for this years Loreal Melbourne Fashion Festival (LMFF) titled 'Desire'. I jumped at the chance to work with a great photographer like Amelia and to work with someone new, so Amelia flew me to Sydney where we proceeded to make her concept come to life!
Amelia chose Slovakian model Alina @ Chic Management(above) and as you can see yourself she is an incredible beauty!
The outfit Alina is wearing above is a piece of sheer cotton fabric I fashioned into a dress by wrapping and cutting, making a strong shouldered, asymmetrical look.

As the exhibition is to be featured during LMFF the focus I thought needed to be on a high end fashion look and decided to use only one designer, Aurelio Costarella, couturier to the stars like Jennifer Hawkins, Rihanna and Sharon Stone to name a few! I have featured Aurelio in this blog before and continue to love his work, as I do his PR director Paul O Connor for getting these couture pieces to me on time!

My recent posts have been about parties, weddings and friends so I thought it best that I get back to what I really set this blog up for, my work and giving you a look behind the scenes at what a stylist such as myself does.
Last Friday I was excited to be working again with French photographer Philippe Auger, great friend and great make up artist Narelle Hall and my talented assistant Tara Ramsay. We were shooting an upcoming editorial story for a certain magazine that I will let you know of in the future, as you can understand they want the shots to be seen first while you flick through their glossy pages! Hence sum images are blurry, on purpose!
The location was a empty warehouse in Richmond Victoria and the feel Philippe wanted was of a rundown theatre with a dark, slightly haunted environment.
Our model was Laura Scaife of Camerons Models who recently was runner up of 'New Zealand's Next Top Model' and who wowed all of us on set for her amazing work, unfortunately she is only here in Melbourne for a couple of weeks but I hope she makes it back for Loreal Melbourne Fashion Festival.

The Wedding of The Von Haus Of Glitzern

A new year, a new decade and the wedding of both! Now far from being a wedding blogger although I have styled so many bridal shoots that I might turn white! I was recently invited to the special day of two creative, talented people who make Melbourne one of the most eclectic, interesting cities to live in! The first a designer herself my friend the gorgeous Caroline Price who now owns and runs (along with business partner Moira Rogers) the unique and amazing store Glitzern, whom I've known for over 10 years and has always been at the forefront of cutting edge design and fashion and her betrothed Hugh Thorn, owner of that fantastic dining experience 'Von Haus' located right next door to Glitzern on Crossley Street Melbourne.
The 'event' took place in the magnificent St Pauls Catherdral Melbourne and was a who's who of Melbourne design and fashion, Lisa Gorman of Gorman, her partner Dean Angelucci, Kara Baker who designed the wedding gown, my date for the day Dean Hewitt of Madam Virtue and many many more 'in the know'!
The bride wore leopard print! Well you don't hear that everyday and you also don't see a bride that looks as stylish as Caroline did set off by a corsage of blood red roses, and of course her handsome husband.
Now of course most married couples hope that the weather will be perfect but the day of this wedding was perfect if you enjoy a day of 40 celsuis! Now most that know me know I hate the extreme heat and this proved a problem of what exactly to wear, hence my dressed down appearance(for me) so it was left to seersucker trousers and cotton scarf, but of course this day is all about the bride!

Another amazing, unique part of this wedding was the cake, a leopard!!! Such attention to detail! After the service all the guests ventured to the Fitzroy Town Hall where a colour theme of Red, Yellow and Blue greeted us and an entertaining night of dancing and merryment!

The colour theme extended to baloons outside the Town Hall, where we attached notes of best wishes for Caroline and Hugh that were let loose into the atmosphere and into their life.

First of all, 'Happy New Year'! I have had a great break over this holiday period and can't wait to get started with this year of 2010! So many new projects to tell you about (in due time) and many more insights into what goes on behind the scenes creating fashion in its many forms!
This time of year sees a lot of my friends return to Australia to visit and share Christmas and New Year with their families and it also allows me to catch up with their exciting careers and life in far flung places! One of my very close (and talented) friends Philip Riches returns most years to see his family from London/Amsterdam and this year again it was great to spend some time with him and hear his many stories of his life as a much sought after fashion photographer working all over the world with a lot of top models, magazines, fashion houses and celebrities!
He recently just shot Yasmin Le Bon, Lara Stone, L'Officiel and Viktor and Rolf to name a few and up until last year was a judge on 'Hollands Next Top Model' for 3 years. He has spent most of the last few years in Amsterdam but last year moved to London to be with his partner.
Philip and I met nearly 12 years ago and worked(and played!) in Australia, Italy and Holland etc for many years, it was always the thing of Big Philip(He's 6ft6!) and Little Philip, photographer and stylist respectively and we certainly had a lot of fun in those early days in Milan and Melbourne shooting some amazing male and female models and enjoying many adventures along the way.
His work continues to inspire me and I feel very lucky to have him in my life even tho we live on opposite sides of the world and only see each other a few times a year, I thought it would be great to share and showcase his amazing talent and for you my blog reader to see his website http://www.philipriches.com/

I love this time of year, so many events, launches and Christmas parties! So I thought I would take you on an outing to the recent parties I was lucky enough to attend! It's always great to see people you don't get a chance to see through the year and catch up on what they've been up to and of course what their wearing!
So my invitation arrived to celebrate the opening of the Louis Vuitton store (pic above) and I knew exactly who to take as my guest, my great friend make up artist Narelle Hall. Narelle and I are very close friends and have worked together for many years , we also share an agent and love a party!!!
I think I was channeling 1982 with my pastel shades look and high hair! Oh and my new vintage 1973 gold Rado watch, love it!

So the following week it was off to another opening party and the amazing new boutique Hotel 'The Cullen', named after the artist Adam Cullen who's work is featured throughout the Hotel.
The Hotel had actors scattered through the venue recreating iconic 'Cullen' subjects (above 'Ned Kelly')and impromptu scenes of over the top guests and pretend staff creating a humorous feel to the night. For you over thirties there was even a sighting of the infamous Pixie Skase! The real one not an actor! All round 'The Cullen' is a great addition to the Prahran scene and I can't wait to stay there, the rooms/suites are wonderfully turned out and so centrally located at 164 Commercial Road Prahran VIC you must take a look!

So after 'The Cullen' opening it was onto the Christmas party of, in my opinion, the top fashion PR company in Melbourne, Ann Morrison Public Relations! It was great to see Ann Morrison herself(pictured above) and the rest of the AMPR crew, Sarah, Brooke, Ben, Jannah and co! I have worked with all at AMPR for many years and always enjoy seeing them at an event or at AMPR headquarters! The Christmas party was held at 'Linden Galleries' in St Kilda and was well on the way to being a crazy night by the time I arrived, it was such a fun party and it was fantastic to see many well known photographers, fashion journalists, designers, stylists and artists in attendance.

I haven't seen Fashion Icon and designer Jenny Bannister for such a long time and was unhappy to hear of the recent closure of her business, Jenny is a national treasure and a truly creative artist and best of all an all round fun person so it is so sad to hear she wont be in the industry anymore, I do hope that she never loses her passion for dressing up!
I've been lucky to have styled a few of Jenny's fashion shows over the years and worked with her off sider Jill Clegg who herself was an amazing designer in the 70's and 80's and entertained me all night at the AMPR party with her stories of London and Melbourne in the 1980's and her close friend Molly Meldrum! I insisted that she must write a book telling all those mad times and letting all know of the many celebrity secrets she has. Jill made my night and I can't wait to see her again.

Traveling for work has always been part of my career(How awful I hear you say!) and indeed a favourite part of the job, from Milan to New York to Hamburg to LA I have been very lucky to mix business with pleasure so I thought a recent 'working' trip to Sydney should be chronicled in this blog!
The original plan was to style a big editorial shoot for a magazine in Sydney, unfortunately at the last minute this was cancelled and so I decided to 'take' it to Sydney anyway and asked my agent and publicist to organise a few meetings and I called a few contacts, so a fun filled and more importantly productive week in Sydney ensured!!!
Many of my close friends live in the 'Sunny' city and I was picked up from the airport by my heaven friend Helen Clemens, who is one of the very few amazing female directors of video clips and television commercials, she directed and I styled the memorable 'Sneaky Sound System' clip 'I Love It' and has directed many other bands and artists, Eskimo Joe, Josh Pyke, and Kasey Chambers to name a few, by the way she is also close friends with Natalie Imbruglia but that is by the by! So after a quick stop at Helen's office to brainstorm about a prospective client(and check out all of her awards) we went straight into a meeting with a celebrity for an upcoming video clip, unfortunately I can't tell you until the clip is out but you'll be the first to know when it does!

Helen and I seemed to have had ESP when co-ordinating our outfits in different cities, after she picked me up! After our meeting Helen and I dropped into my fantastic friend Nigel Stanislaus's home where I would be staying. Nigel is the Maybelline Make up Artist of Australia and is one of the busiest and most sought after make up artists in Australia, we work together on many different jobs over many years and both continue to inspire each others creativity. We also continue to have the most fun in our work and private lives and share an agent in Melbourne who we both adore! So lucky to have such talented and fun friends.

So part of the reason for coming to Sydney was to attend the 'Barbie does Mimco' party at the Mimco Sydney store and I would be accompanied by Nigel, Veronica Moore(my agent), Dean Drieberg(my publicist), Andrea Le Seuer(my producer) and photographer Christian Blanchard along with his girlfriend Australia's Next Top Model star and international supermodel Alice Burdeu (who just happen to be Sydney and Melbourne's 'Hot' couple at the moment!)
The party was a very pink affair, as you can imagine, and many of Sydney's fashion set were there and all of my agency, 'Miss Bossy Boots' attendees had a fantastic time enjoying the Champagne and cup cakes! Of course the latest Mimco campaign was a Miss Bossy Boots production photographed by Christian Blanchard and make up by Nigel Stanislaus!

So a great night was had by all and ended up at the Miss Bossy Boots penthouse for drinks well into the night!
Dean Drieberg my publicist had organized a lunch meeting with his good friend rising actress Gracie Otto who I had met at the David Jones Marquee during Caulfield Cup in Melbourne and we discussed working together, Gracie has an upcoming TV series and many other projects in her future, I look forward to seeing more of her, Christian Blanchard also joined us as pictured.

I've always said that style has nothing to do with money and was happily suprised to see that Londons Top Shop has been brought to the upstairs of Paddington's Incu store, a great white space showcasing a selection of Top Shops mens and womenswear and I left the store with quite a few bags!
My friend Helen took me for a great outing around the harbour on a perfect Sydney Spring day and as we were walking we ran into Deborah Hutton filming her Qantas inflight ads, I have to say that I heard her well spoken voice before seeing her!
A visit to Sydney for me wouldn't be complete without seeing my dear friend(I've known her for 20 years!) and now Grazia Magazine Fashion Director Glynis Traill Nash, a little secret that not many people know is that Glynis is not only a well known and loved Fashion Director she also is an amazing singer! It was great to hear all her news as well as a few secrets about the new job, sshhhh!

Charlotte's Web...

A little part of my recent Sydney trip was a spontaneous catch up with the fantastically witty and mistress of the one liner, Charlotte Dawson of 'Australia's Next Top Model' fame and now host of 'The Contender' on Foxtel. As I mentioned in the last post my great friend Nigel Stanislaus and I made guest appearances on ANTM and now Nigel and Charlotte are friends after spending a lot of time together on location and on the set of ANTM. So when Nigel suggested we have brunch with Charlotte I jumped at the chance, I simple adore Charlotte, she so needs to have her own talk show and I don't see why TV execs don't give her one immediately! Her quick wit and natural comedic timing is so rare on Australian TV at the moment and I think Australian TV is screaming out for a talk show hosted by someone like her! Anyway I love her!
She calls me 'Ugly Bird' after my piece on ANTM when I remarked that one of the contestants looked like (in costume) an 'Ugly Bird"! Probably best you take a look on YouTube (ANTM Cycle 5 Episode 5 Part 1) And she calls Nigel 'Ting Tong' well umm probably best I don't explain that one for fear of political correctness anyway Nigel also calls himself this too .
So all in all it was great to see Charlotte and I look forward to seeing her soon!

A few weeks ago I was invited by my friend and amazing designer/couturier, Aurelio Costarella to view his Autumn Winter 2010 collection. I've known Ray for probably 18 years and have followed his career and watched as he has expanded his brand worldwide. He now shows in New York regularly and sells his beautiful creations around the globe.
As a stylist who dresses Actresses that grace the red carpet these showings are a regular feature of my working week but I always look forward to seeing the latest Aurelio Costarella collection and went to this one with my close friend Sonia Audino who is now their representative in Melbourne and a fantastic designer herself, she also has worn the label in its many forms for more than 20 years and by the way has a very tiny waist( as you can see in the photo!)

Styling Daniela Farinacci for Caulfield Cup

This last Saturday I was asked to attend Melbourne's Caulfield Cup by my wonderful friend and client, the actress Daniela Farinacci (star of such movies as 'Lantana', 'Little Fish' and 'Look Both Ways', and currently appearing in the SBS drama 'East West 101') as her date, also if I could find just the right outfit for Daniela to wear to this prestigious horse race and her attendance to the 'David Jones' Marquee with Australia's A-list.
I asked Daniela if I may photograph and blog the process and she was gracious enough to allow me to take you the reader into the inner sanctum of dressing an actress for a special event!
It is a very similar process to sourcing for a photo shoot but with one big difference, it's more personal than working with a model for editorial, as I have worked with Daniela for quite a few years now and got to know her as a person and friend I believe our relationship has changed and a lot more trust has come into it and for me as a stylist dressing well known people the most important thing is that the client wears the clothing, not the clothing wear them. Meaning that each individual must reflect who they are not the fashion dictate their look and public profile. So for me the process of fitting, talking to, getting to know my celebrity clients is the most important part of my continuing relationship with them.

When asked 'What do you do?'at dinner parties, special events or anywhere I feel that when I answer 'I'm a stylist' (for those not involved in the fashion industry) they have no idea what this means, (and I'm sure to this day, after 12 years as a stylist with some success my Father has no idea exactly what I do!) so I thought I would blog the whole process of a recent shoot for the cover of M Magazine in Sunday's 'The Age' newspaper just so it may inform a little of what I actually do!
It starts with a fashion editor(such as the gorgeous Rachel Wells, Fashion Editor of M Magazine) calling my agent (www.missbossyboots.com.au) to check my availability and then express a short brief on what style the shoot will take, this is then relayed to me and then hopefully the ideas flow on what clothing, designers, accessories and overall feel I will work on and source.
As you digest what direction a shoot will take your ideas formulate and I picture in my head
which designer will work best with which publication and brief, of course this has come after many years in the business, I'm lucky to have worked with so many great people and particularly designers that I am so grateful to work with. If there is one piece of advice I can give to up and coming stylists, is treat your suppliers and designers with respect and gratitude for without them and their support you have nothing! As an ex designer myself I can say that a stylist who is professional and easy to work with, will have a long and successful career.
So as this shoot was centered around a Spring Racing Carnival theme I decided to take myself to the ever stylish Teresa Liano the designer of T.L Wood (www.tlwoodaustralia.com) and was lucky that the lady herself was able to show me the range, (which was familiar as I had styled her Look Book for that season) I chose a fantastic grey suit and a watermelon dress that I thought fitted our theme.
Next I went onto the store Madam Virtue & Co where the fabulous Dean took me through the latest designs from Europe and America that the store is known for and Madam Virtue & Co's own label. A trip to Madam Virtue & Co is always an eccentric and fun filled excursion and I thoroughly recommend that you treat yourself and pop in (Madam Virtue & Co 5 Crossley Street Melbourne) where you'll meet house model and mascot Maude the Shar Pei dog! So after discovering an amazing 1950's inspired dress, a Comme De Garcon shift, leather bag, Nina Ricci bracelet and the most gigantic hat I had ever seen I bid Dean farewell and made a phone call and lined up my next appointment with 'Milliner to the Stars' Kerrie Stanley.
Kerrie has 'Hatted' among other celebrities Jennifer Hawkins and her millinery is sold all over the country, she is the milliner of choice during Spring Racing Carnival and I can say I always look first to her when I need to dress an actress during Carnival, as I will be this season!
As you can see in the photos Kerrie's work is unique, stylish and always ahead of the trends, everything I look for in a designer. Kerrie showed me through the current collection at her showroom(388 High Street Prahran) and I chose the hats I needed which were collected just before our shoot later that week. I then headed off to collect a selection of shoes from Zomp Melbourne.
So shoot day came, I was picked up from my apartment by my wonderful friend and talented Make Up Artist Narelle Hall and we headed off to 'The Age' office in the city to prepare our model Lucy McIntosh from Chadwick Models for our cover shoot. Lucy has the most amazing eyes and when she arrived Narelle and I work shopped the make up and hair look that would best work for the theme and Lucy's look, by the way Lucy was suffering from a bout of pleurisy and was far from well but as the professional model she is she soldiered on! While make up was done I bumped into the fab Jan Breen Burns Fashion Editor of 'The Age' and we chatted about this blog and Twitter, we both think Fashion has to embrace the new social media and move with the times. It was good to see Jan, I usually only see her front row at fashion shows!
So off we went to our location, that day it was a horse trainers yard in Flemington close to the Racecourse where we were shooting Lucy with a racehorse! Both of whom would grace the cover of M Magazine, both of whom would hopefully look fantastic and both of whom had never met each other!!! Charlie (the horse) didn't like posing too much and Lucy didn't like posing too much with a horse that decided he would eat her left breast! Suffice to say it took a little coaxing from both to come together and get our shot which you will see in the final out come that is the cover of M Magazine, the shot chosen featured dress and hat by Madam Virtue & Co.
I do hope this gives you a little(or not so little blog post) insight into just one of the projects that makes up a stylist's, such as myself, week!

Home, be it oh so tiny!

I'm constantly asked what my home is like, well let me just say that I have been lucky to have a few beautiful homes in my time, from my wonderful 'white' country house 'La Colina' to my 'moody chocolate' Melbourne apartment in Prahran, to my 'Sex in the City' South Yarra apartment, but at the moment I am living in an incredibly tiny 1960's blonde brick apartment in the Melbourne inner city suburb of Windsor. I originally bought this apartment as an investment to renovate and rent out but have found that life moves in mysterious ways and I am still here 22 months later! Of course I still wish to rent this apartment out and buy something a little larger but wanted to blog that the most amazing thing has happened, I have found that I, a stylist that loves to acquire more and more things, can actually live with (and in) an incredibly small space and actually enjoy it!!! Its really quite liberating. So this a glimpse into my home, small and stylish and a little different than you would expect!

I recently returned from a visit to Perth where I was asked to conduct a Master Class on styling to fashion students, fashion designers and fashionistas during Perth Fashion Festival, I will post another story on PFF soon but first wanted to share with you my friend Aurelio Costarella's amazing store 'Post Emporium', that is situated in North Perth Western Australia.
On this visit to Perth I was pleasantly suprised to see a resurgence of up market, beautifully detailed boutiques that could sit anywhere in the world, including 'Dilettante', 'Zekka' and my fantastic friend Leith Groves new store 'Varga Girl' opening in Leederville soon.
But back to 'Post Emporium', Aurelio has created an amazing space with hints to 'Colette' in Paris and 'Liberty' in London, there is a private Haute Couture room to view the beautifully crafted gowns that Aurelio is so well known for, the ready to wear range is also on show and many unique treasures collected from around the world displayed in the main room. I was lucky to be there on a day where the light through the windows danced around the store to give it an ethereal feel that you will see in the above pictures.

Doramania!

Anyone that knows me and my work knows that I enjoy wearing fur and using fur in my work, the word 'Doramania' means 'the obsession of owning fur' and I suppose this makes me a Doramaniac! Now I have to point out to all you out there that the fur that I wear and use in photo shoots and runways is almost always vintage and that it is important to me because it is re using an item of clothing that just a few years back would have been thrown in landfill. Now far from being an environmentalist I do think that recycling and wearing vintage clothing is doing a very small part in helping the planet, may I also point out that I have not eaten meat for 22 years so in my very strange and delusional mind I think I might have some Karma points up my sleeve in regard to wearing fur! Cop out or no cop out there it is, I respect all opinions and hope all respect mine. Anyway any Doramaniacs out there??? This week has been a fantastic frantic fashion hurricane, from styling the amazing salon show for 'Madam Virtue' on Monday night to the madness that surrounds Bryan Boy(Infamous fashion blogger brought out to Australia by ACMI for a Marc Jacobs film festival) to the Runway shows of Melbourne Spring Fashion Week and it continues to be a very busy week.
'MADAM VIRTUE'
On Monday night at a wonderful Parisian space upstairs of Melbourne's Becco Restaurant, the fabulous talented JC Lloyd Southwell D'Anvers showed his chic and spectacular collection, designed with a rare attention to detail not seen in many Australian collections I was very honoured to be styling this intimate show. A month ago JC and his life partner and Director of 'Madam Virtue', Dean and I sat down to discuss the idea of creating JC's Australian debut collection fashion show. Through many meetings we created the intimate (but inspiring) salon show that an elite 60 people(including the minister of the arts, actresses,journalists,bloggers and fashion stars) attended and I can say that all were totally blown away with JC and Deans vision of modern Haute Couture creations.
Every step of the way I have enjoyed the working relationship/friendship with JC and Dean and so look forward to our next collaboration so in the next few days i hope to show you the images of the show in all its glory, the image here is by Fashionising.com

In The Begining...

Well here I am, me. The last person in the world who I thought would set up a blog, who is not computer savvy and who only recently embraced the Twitter world, but who over the last few weeks thought that maybe someone, somewhere may be interested in what I might (or might not) be up too. Granted I suppose I am lucky to have a great life doing a job I love with many unique and exciting people and have the opportunity to give the reader of this blog a look into the world behind the business of styling some well known(and some completely unknown but fascinating) people.
I have called this blog 'STYLIST SAYS' (like the game Simon Says) as most of my friends, assistants and my agent can tell you I am a man of standards and do like to proclaim that certain items of fashion should never see the light of day! Of course this is with a sense of humour but you may or may not agree that in these days of extremely casual clothing it is up to the arbiters of style to keep fashion standards high, that said it is still important to say that I much admire people who get it completely wrong but are making the effort in comparison to those who travel the middle road.
Stay tuned I can feel this is just the tip of the iceberg and hope you enjoy the ride...
